Old Ironsides In exploring a unit on Poetry, students will research the USS Constitution and construct a guide that a tourist could follow while taking a walking tour of the vessel. The students are asked to consider the following essential questions: What are some present day uses of the USS Constitution? What is the significance of the naval vessel to Massachusetts, Oliver Wendell Holmes and his poem, Old Ironsides? 10

Juvenile Justice Students will follow the research process to locate information to be used as evidence in a comparative research paper. Essential questions: What is justice? How do non-traditional (alternative)juvenile justice systems differ from traditional juvenile justice systems? What would be the most effective juvenile justice system? 7

Primary sources Students will learn how to use primary and secondary sources to add credible depth to their research projects. Whether it is a photograph, book, map, letter, postcard, newspaper, or official document, students can use sources to reconstruct and relive history. Students will be given the opportunity to apply their skills to learning activities. Essentail Question: How can I tell the difference between primary and secondary sources? 9

Introduction to Research Essential Question: What sources will help me complete my research paper? What are my strengths and weaknesses when doing research? Students will see many sources are available to them in different formats. They will explore these during the unit. How do you find books using the Dewey Decimal System? The main source for this lesson is non-fiction books. 9

Closing Lesson for the Gothic Genre The gothic introductory lesson is the pre-curser to a unit on gothic literature. At the close of the lesson the students will be asked to complete a culminating project on the genre in conjunction with the school librarian. The students must create a display within the library that outlines gothic literature and features selections of gothic literature within the display. Students will also be required to write a short essay, answer the following essential question: How does the “gothic” or popular culture compare with the “gothic” of American Literature? 11

Animal Research Project The lesson is designed to teach students how to use the BIG6 graphic organizer so they will have a systematic way to approach research papers. The students will then have to look-up a book on the subject and retrieve the book form the shelf to show they can use the library online catalog system. A review on accessing databases from the school lab and home will be done. Student will choose topic. 7

ELA Research Paper Introduction During this lesson on writing the research paper, students will be able to answer the following questions: What are the steps of writing a research paper? What sources are available through the school library media center and state library? How does one evaluate sources? This lesson was collaboratively taught by Molly Perry and Dawn Coughlin. 11

Use and Evaluation of Online Resources During this lesson the students explore specific research sites with the intent of acquiring the ability to critique a research site for its worthiness as a valid research tool for their purposes, concentrating on accuracy, validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context. They will also master navigation of each site while adding to their search skills. 11, 12
