JES & Co. Announces the inclusion of the Common Core State Standards in the Achievement Standards Network (ASN)

JES & Co. announced today the inclusion of the Common Core State Standards in the Achievement Standards Network (ASN). The Common Core State Standards Initiative was led by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) representing 48 states, 2 territories, and the District of Columbia.

The Common Core State Standards*:
1. Are aligned with college and work expectations;
2. Are clear, understandable and consistent;
3. Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills;
4. Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards;
5. Are informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and
6. Are evidence-based.

JES & Co. supports the Common Core State Standards Initiative and has made the standards freely available as linked data through the open, public and free ASN repository. The GLRC, which consists of the ASN, the ASN Toolkit, The Gateway, and the Open Metadata Registry, will provide the means for complex mapping, correlations and discoverability to take place amongst educational resources and academic standards. For example, using the GLRC solution stack, existing state standard alignments will be mapped to the Common Core State Standards, and educational resources that are aligned to existing individual state standards will automatically be aligned with the corresponding Common Core State Standard.

“When the GLRC is fully deployed, educational resources will be shared by teachers, parents, students and the general public like never before; resources will be discovered from across the web using a simple non-proprietary format called the Resource Description Framework (RDF), the linked data structure of the Semantic Web,” explained Joseph Chapman, head of Data Services and Deployment at JES & Co.

About the ASN
The Achievement Standards Network (ASN) provides an RDF-based framework for the description of achievement standards promulgated by governments and other organizations to prescribe what students should know and be able to do as a result of specific educational experiences.
The ASN has five distinct components:

1. A repository of academic standards, each with its own unique, web-addressable Uniform Resource Identifier (URI)
2. A data input tool, enabling direct input of standards documents into the repository
3. Viewers and web services to access the standards
4. A resolution service that resolves each URI into machine readable text
5. A network of organizations that share, use, develop tools and leverage the technical advantages of the ASN in improving education

ASN data is open source and made available to the education community at no cost.

About the GLRC
The Global Learning Resource Connection (GLRC) is a public-private collaboration which brings to fruition ongoing work between JES & Co., a U.S. 501(c) (3) education research organization, corporate sponsors and education agencies worldwide. Leading the initial corporate involvement are founding worldwide partners Microsoft, Cisco, Cengage/Gale, the National Education Association (NEA), and other leading corporations in process. The GLRC ties together several significant semantic web technologies developed through funding from the National Science Foundation and is designed to support cyber learning. The GLRC supports the implementation of the mapping of major collections of learning resources in systems around the world to the machine-readable expressions of the learning outcomes based on the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) modeling and technical framework. The work will implement the international linking of those resources through trans-jurisdictional mapping of learning outcomes by means of Semantic Web/Linked Data principles for teacher/learner access and use.
