Whats New?

In July the GLRC made its debut in Europe at the IMS Global Learning Consortium's (IMS) working group meeting in Frankfurt, Germany. The program was very well received and resulted in several additional countries joining the collaboration. There is a common need to share education resources between countries that are correlated to each country's curriculum. Several countries hosted GLRC presentations to enlist their members in the collaboration.

In the U.S. the GLRC was launched at the IMS working group meeting on November 17, 2010, at Lone Star College Online in The Woodlands, Texas.

November 17, 2010 GLRC Workgroup Update

The IMS Global Learning Consortium held its quarterly working group meeting at Lone Star College Online in The Woodlands, Texas on November 15-18, 2010. The working groups were well attended by both U.S. and international companies and organizations. Wednesday, November 17th was filled with GLRC activities. The day started with a Resource Description Framework (RDF) 101 workshop which was followed by a technical discussion about the Achievement Standards Network (ASN), an RDF framework for describing academic standards and curriculum. The morning ended with a technical demonstration of using ASN learning objectives within IMS, specifically the Common Cartridge and LODE specifications.

The afternoon was dedicated to public presentations about digital learning resources and their role in K-12, higher education, federal programs and international collaboration. Rob Abel, the CEO of IMS kicked off the afternoon with the vision of IMS and how it relates to the GLRC projects. Following Dr. Abel's IMS overview was a panel session with John Wilson, NEA's executive Director, Steve Midgley, the Deputy Director U.S. Department of Education, William Durham, the Associate Vice Chancellor of Lone Star College Online, and David Massart, the Chief Architect of the European Schoolnet (a European collaboration between over 20 countries). Diny Golder concluded the afternoon with an overview of the GLRC partners' programs and its contribution to IMS projects.

Both Scholasatic Professional Media and Technology & Learning Magazine attended the session and conducted interviews with the panelists and Diny Golder and Rob Abel. Technology & Learning Magazine filmed the interviews. You can see these interviews at the following link: http://bcove.me/6wsmreby

Achievement Standards Network (ASN)

The Achievement Standards Network (ASN) provides an RDF-based framework for the description of achievement standards promulgated by governments and other organizations to prescribe what students should know and be able to do as a result of specific educational experiences.

The ASN has five distinct components:

  1. A repository of academic standards, each with its own unique, web-addressable Uniform Resource Identifier (URI)
  2. A data input tool, enabling direct input of standards documents into the repository
  3. Viewers and web services to access the standards
  4. A resolution service that resolves each URI into machine readable text
  5. A network of organizations that share, use, develop tools and leverage the technical advantages of the ASN in improving education

ASN data is open source and made publically available for unrestricted use through a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license. To learn more about the ASN, please go to: http://bit.ly/eE8kXm

Where can you get educational resources mapped to your state standards?

Another common need of GLRC partners is to be able to correlate educational resources to state and national standards (curriculum). The National Education Association (NEA), a Premier Sponsor of the GLRC, is making sure this happens for their 3.3 million members. The Gateway is the oldest and largest digital library for teachers and can be found at www.thegateway.org. The library provides access to quality education resources provided by over 700 contributors including PBS, the Smithsonian, National Geographic, NASA, and many more. Users can quickly view how each resource meets their local standards. The Gateway gets over 4 million hits and provides over 50,000 resources each month

In addition to the library functions, the Gateway resources are featured in a section called Joann's Weekly Picks. Joann is the Gateway's resident librarian and each week she selects and features new educational resources. Next to her column is Peggy's Corner. Peggy, the Gateway's resident teacher and expert, discusses how to integration Joann's picks in the classroom. Both Joann's Picks and Peggy's Corner are updated each week and followed on the Gateway's Facebook page and Twitter for continued discussions with educators.
