The Server+ Examination measures the technical knowledge of a server system, and the compatibility of each of the components. CompTIA recommends 18 to 24 months experience in the server technologies industry and at least one other IT certification, typically A+, before acquiring the Server+ Certification. The following are the key focus areas along with a summary of what is to be learned in each particular area.

Basic Knowledge - Students will learn the basics of planning, installing, configuring, and maintaining servers, as well as server-level hardware implementations, data storage subsystems, data recovery, and I/O subsystems.

Installation - Students will learn how to Install hardware using ESD best practices, including the ability to mount the rack installation; cut and crimp network cabling; install UPS; verify SCSI ID configuration and termination; install external devices such as keyboards, monitors, subsystems, and modem racks; and verify power-on via the power-on sequence.

Upgrading - Students will learn how to upgrade server components, including adding hard drives, processors, increasing memory and performing hardware verification. Students will also learn how to update software, drivers, configurations and service tools.

Maintenance and Support - Students will learn how to identify and correct misconfigurations and/or upgrades and determine if problems are related to hardware, software, or a possible virus. In addition students will acquire the knowledge to perform and verify full and routine backups.

Disaster Recovery - Students will learn how to plan for disaster recovery by using fault tolerance/fault recovery; identifying types of backup hardware and restoration schemes; confirming and using off-site storage for backup; and documenting and testing disaster recovery plans.

Performance - Students will learn about server performance including security issues and server room environmental issues, including temperature, humidity, ESD, power surges, back-up generator issues, fire suppression and flood considerations.
