The Achievement Standards Network is Providing Learning Objectives to the Learning Registry
The U.S. Departments of Education and Defense announced the launch of the Learning Registry, an open source community and technology designed to improve the quality and availability of learning resources in education. The launch is an important milestone in the effort to more effectively share information about learning resources, including how the resource meets state and national learning objectives. "JES & Co. is very pleased to be part of the Learning Registry community and we are excited that the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) provides the framework for describing global learning objectives along with U.S. state and national academic standards," explains Diny Golder, Executive Director of JES & Co.
The White House was represented by Aneesh Chopra, the U.S. Chief Technology Officer. "This effort represents the Obama administration's push toward a light-weight, bottom-up, standards driven government," explained Chopra. Speaking to the Learning Registry's community effort, Secretary Duncan adds, "We've also had great partners and participants from the private sector and from other countries. Agilix, ISKME, Achieve, Better Lesson, Benetech, Booz Allen and JES and Co. have already started sharing and showing information about online resources, including data about resource quality, standards alignment, usage, and accessibility," continued Secretary Duncan.
In the U.S., states and publishers are hurrying to make sure their resources are correlated to the National Governors Association and Council of Chief State School Officer’s recently released Common Core State Standards (CCSS). JES & Co. has made the process less expensive by publishing the standards as open source data and has made the process simpler by developing a suite of tools for both publishers and states to use. "Transitioning from state standards to Common Core State Standards has never been easier," explains Golder. "JES & Co.'s new mapping tool helps publishers to seamlessly create cross grade and subject student plans that can use the Learning Registry for resource discovery and textbook augmentation," said Golder.
The Achievement Standards Network is made available as part of the Global Learning Resource Connection (GLRC).

The Achievement Standards Network (ASN) provides an RDF-based framework for the description of achievement standards promulgated by governments and other organizations to prescribe what students should know and be able to do as a result of specific educational experiences.
