Chung, a key contributor in educational publishing, joins JES & Co. to build the ASN into the worldwide source of open access machine-readable standards

JES & Co. is excited to announce the appointment of Chris Chung as the new Achievement Standards Network (ASN) Director. JES & Co., a leader in research and deployment of open standards, welcomes Mr. Chung to the team as they expand the ASN to meet the needs of educators and publishers across the globe.

Large Grant Focuses on the Achievement Standards Network, Common Core State Standards, and New Network Services

JES & Co. is excited to announce that they have received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to sustain and continue development of the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) and to expand the ASN’s services. The Achievement Standards Network provides access to machine-readable representations of learning objectives published by education agencies and organizations. The National Governors Association (NGA) and Council of Chief State School Officer’s (CCSSO) released Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Mathematics and English Language Arts. The ASN contains the Common Core standards and as part of the grant, JES & Co. will enable searching by alternate codes published by CCSSO using existing ASN technical services.

The Achievement Standards Network is Providing Learning Objectives to the Learning Registry

The U.S. Departments of Education and Defense announced the launch of the Learning Registry, an open source community and technology designed to improve the quality and availability of learning resources in education. The launch is an important milestone in the effort to more effectively share information about learning resources, including how the resource meets state and national learning objectives. "JES & Co. is very pleased to be part of the Learning Registry community and we are excited that the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) provides the framework for describing global learning objectives along with U.S. state and national academic standards," explains Diny Golder, Executive Director of JES & Co.

In the U.S., states and publishers are hurrying to make sure their resources are correlated to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in addition to the already mandated state standards. JES & Co. has developed processes that make the job simpler and less expensive. The GLRC team is putting to use linked-data, making relationships between learning objectives and resources both dynamic and flexible. What is getting the state and district superintendents so excited? GLRC tools and services are enabling teachers to teach to the CCSS and still report and assess using the state standards. And publishers are finding that their products and services are not only meeting today’s multi-standards requirements but are making individualized learning plans and cross grade/subject options a reality. Don’t get left behind.

The poster, "Conceptual Discovery of Educational Resources through Learning Objectives" by Stuart A. Sutton and Diny Golder, was presented at the Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, ECDL 2009, held in Corfu, Greece. You can read it in full here.
