Welcome to the Achievement Standards Network

Achievement Standards Network LogoThe Achievement Standards Network (ASN) provides open access to machine-readable representations of learning objectives published by education agencies and organizations including the Common Core State Standards. The ASN assigns a uniform resource identifier (URI) to each standard creating a linkable and referenceable entity on the Semantic Web. Users correlate to ASN's open-source URI's to enable the discoverability and accessibility of their content.

JES & Co. manages the ASN in the United States (ASN:US) and consults globally on issues surrounding educational metadata and learning outcome frameworks. The ASN is also in use in Australia (ASN:AU).

Introducing Semantic Tagging

February 22, 2013 by jesandco

The ASN is built on Linked Data i.e. using the Web to connect related data not previously linked. So naturally, we wanted to start connecting ASN learning outcomes to other Linked Open Datasets. We are starting off with the mother of all Linked Open Datasets, DBpedia. You will now start seeing semantic tags included in ASN data that tie specific learning outcomes to related people, places and things. For example, a learning outcome discussing a historical person, John F. Kennedy and an event, Cuban Missile Crisis, can now be enriched with additional data about those specific things from around the Semantic Web.

We've included a screenshot (below) of a particular learning outcome that has been semantically tagged with ASN Concept Terms and the result of clicking on a given term. Try it out yourself. We think this adds great value to ASN data and to the applications that consume it.

5 Million Triples

January 22, 2013 by jesandco

Happy to announce that the ASN RDF Quad-Store now contains over 5 million triples (5,519,769 as of our last count). We are storing over 400,000 ASN Statements and 1,100+ ASN Standard Documents. We anticipate the continued growth of our RDF store in the coming weeks as we have begun to roll out the state-specific Common Core State Standards into the ASN.

August 20, 2012 by jesandco

JES & Co. is excited to announce that they have received a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to sustain and continue development of the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) and to expand the ASN's services.
