JES & Co. Announces Successful Phase I Testing of State and National Achievement Standards Database

--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 31, 2004--

Tucson-based non-profit JES & Co. today announced completion of Phase I testing for the Achievement Standards Network (ASN), a Web-based collection of learning and achievement standards and student performance objectives. The project is scheduled to deliver a common, consistent and authoritative collection of all of the state and national content, learning and achievement standards. The ASN will be available free of charge for educational and non-commercial use.

"With over 90,000 different learning standards topics and benchmarks now entered in the Achievement Standards Network database, we've moved into maintenance mode as far as collecting and transcribing the states' math, science, reading and language arts content standards," said Nevin Lambert, JES & Co.'s director of research and development. "But that's just the beginning," he continued. "The project really belongs to the education community, so now we need to make sure that the format and structure we're proposing addresses their needs and use cases."

To accomplish that, the ASN collection and technical specifications will be reviewed by the newly forming Education Resources Special Interest Group (ERSIG) before undergoing final development and release. ERSIG is comprised of educators, publishers of educational resources, and representatives from state education agencies and departments of education. It is hosted by the National Institute for Community Innovations.

Lambert expressed confidence that the Achievement Standards Network will gain broad acceptance. "We were very careful to adhere to open standards, such as the new Schools Interoperability Framework (SIF). The ASN collection will make it much easier for publishers and software developers to produce compliant and compatible products and services economically and efficiently."

Achievement standards play an increasingly important role as states look to find ways of reducing costs and meeting the information gathering and reporting requirements of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) federal education act. Once the Achievement Standards Network completes final testing and review, it will be freely available under an open license agreement for non-commercial and education purposes.
