| What Do You Think? Analyzing Points of View About an Issue | Many times the media presents controversial issues as black and white. But, most problems have many sides. The first research paper will require students to consider three perspectives on an issue. Their essential question is like the one modeled above. After doing background reading to determine three possible perspectives students will look at multiple resources (print to online) to determine the perspectives they wish to research and develop their own opinion based on their research. | 10 | |
| U.S. Westward Expansion | Students will explore the significant changes that people experienced during the westward expansion of our country. We will discuss the many areas of people's lives that were different from what we currently experience. | American Revolution | Students will research an event from the American Revolution and gather information about the event’s impact on American life at the time. They will prepare a presentation addressing the event and focusing on the essential questions: How did that event impact American life today? | Closing Lesson for the Gothic Genre | The gothic introductory lesson is the pre-curser to a unit on gothic literature. At the close of the lesson the students will be asked to complete a culminating project on the genre in conjunction with the school librarian. The students must create a display within the library that outlines gothic literature and features selections of gothic literature within the display. Students will also be required to write a short essay, answer the following essential question: How does the “gothic” or popular culture compare with the “gothic” of American Literature? | 11 | |
