What Do You Think? Analyzing Points of View About an Issue Many times the media presents controversial issues as black and white. But, most problems have many sides. The first research paper will require students to consider three perspectives on an issue. Their essential question is like the one modeled above. After doing background reading to determine three possible perspectives students will look at multiple resources (print to online) to determine the perspectives they wish to research and develop their own opinion based on their research. 10

Juvenile Justice Students will follow the research process to locate information to be used as evidence in a comparative research paper. Essential questions: What is justice? How do non-traditional (alternative)juvenile justice systems differ from traditional juvenile justice systems? What would be the most effective juvenile justice system? 7

Secret Life of Bees Research Students are to use the connection of the setting and time period of the novel, The Secret Life of Bees, to make connections to events in the novel to events in America's history. The essay should provide information about the topic as well as explain its significance. Student's sample essential question will be along the lines of "What is the [insert topic here] and how did it affect the Civil Rights Movement in this country?" 9, 10

ELA Research Paper Introduction During this lesson on writing the research paper, students will be able to answer the following questions: What are the steps of writing a research paper? What sources are available through the school library media center and state library? How does one evaluate sources? This lesson was collaboratively taught by Molly Perry and Dawn Coughlin. 11

Use and Evaluation of Online Resources During this lesson the students explore specific research sites with the intent of acquiring the ability to critique a research site for its worthiness as a valid research tool for their purposes, concentrating on accuracy, validity, appropriateness for needs, importance, and social and cultural context. They will also master navigation of each site while adding to their search skills. 11, 12
