This document is an application profile (AP) that clarifies the use of the properties in the description of Achievement Standards Network (ASN) standards document and the document statement.

For a general introduction to Achievement Standards Network (ASN) data, see How the ASN Works. The ASN abstract and data models are based on the DCMI Abstract Model (http://dublincore.org/documents/abstract-model/) and its associated principles. The schema used to describe the two entities in the ASN conceptual model are drawn from a number of different publicly declared namespaces as set out in Section 3 below. In essence, the ASN is an application profile (ASN-AP) that has been encoded following the constraint language set out in Description Set Profiles: A Constraint Language for Dublin Core Application Profiles (http://dublincore.org/documents/2008/03/31/dc-dsp/). As an extensible metadata schema, the ASN embraces the DCMI principles of property (element) refinement and dumb-down.

Author	A person or organization chiefly responsible for the intellectual content of the standards document.
Date Copyrighted	Date of copyright of the standards document.
Date Valid	Where available, the date (often a range) of validity of a resource.
Description	A description of the standards document.
Education Level	A general statement describing the education or training context. Alternatively, a more specific statement of the location of the audience in terms of its progression through an education or training context. I.e., the grade or grade bands covered by the standards document.
Export Version	The URI of the ASN export version of the standards document.
File Created	[Deprecated*] The specific date the ASN standards file was generated by the ASN repository.
Has Child	Identifies top-level child statements of the standards document being described.
Jurisdiction	A legal, quasi-legal, organizational or institutional domain of the entity mandating the use of the achievement standard--e.g., California, Singapore, NCTM.
Language	A language of the standards document.
License	A legal document giving official permission to do something with the standards document.
Local Subject	The text string denoting the subject of the document as designated by the promulgating agency. The local subject may be different from the ASN subject assigned to a standard document as an organizing mechanism in the ASN.
Note	A documentation note that describes signification changes or provides aids to administration.
Publication Status	The publication status of the of the standard document--e.g., "Draft", "Published", "Deprecated".
Publisher	An entity responsible for making the resource available. In the ASN, the publisher is the promulgating agency of the standards document.
Repository Date	The date the standard document was added to the ASN repository.
Rights	Information about rights held in and over the standards document.
Rights Holder	A person or organization owning or managing rights over the standards document.
Source	The achievement standard document from which the ASN representation is derived. ♦ The URL and/or formal citation of the original achievement standards document.
Subject	The learning area/discipline of the standards document.
Table of Contents	A list of subunits of the resource.
Title	A name given to the resource.

Property Label	Context-Specific Definition
Align From	A statement from which the statement being described is aligned.
Align To	A statement to which the statement being described is aligned.
Alternative Statement Notation	An alphanumeric notation or ID code identifying the statement in common use among end-users.
Author	A person or organization chiefly responsible for the intellectual content of the derived statements.
Authority Status	The status of a standards statement denoting whether the statement owes its origin to the promulgating agency of the standards document of which the statement is a member (i.e., value "Original") or to some 3rd party (i.e., value "Derived").
Broad Alignment	The target competency covers all of the relevant concepts in the competency being described as well as relevant concepts not found in the competency being described.
Comment	Supplemental text provided by the promulgating body that clarifies the nature, scope or use of the statement being described.
Comprised Of	The resource being described includes, comprehends or encompass, in whole or in part, the meaning, nature or importance of the resource being referenced.
Concept Keyword	Denote the significant topicality of the achievement standard using free-text keywords and phrases derived and assigned by the indexer, e.g., "George Washington", "Ayers Rock", etc.
Concept Term	Denotes the topicality of the achievement standard—e.g., "Phythagorean Theorem", "Trigonometric functions", "Forces and energy", "Scientific method", "Oral history" etc.
Creator	An entity primarily responsible for making the resource.
Created	Date of creation of a 3rd-party derived statement.
Cross Subject Reference	An explicit assertion by the promulgating agency that establishes a relationship between the statement being described and statement in a separate subject standards document (interdisciplinary statement references).
Derived From	The URI of a statement from which the statement being described has been derived. The «derivedFrom» property is used by 3rd parties only in derived statements and must appear in conjunction with a value of "Derived" in the statement's «authorityStatus» property.
Description	The text of the statement being described.
Education Level	A general statement describing the education or training context. Alternatively, a more specific statement of the location of the audience in terms of its progression through an education or training context. I.e., the grade or grade bands covered by the statement being described.
Exact Alignment	The relevant concepts in both competencies are coextensive.
Exact Match	Used to link two concepts, indicating a high degree of confidence that the concepts can be used interchangeably across a wide range of information retrieval applications.
Has Child	Identifies the child of a statement (establishes the downward path in the chain of statements in a taxon path).
Identifier	An alternative URI by which the resource is identified.
Indexing Status	The indexing status of statement denoting whether correlators should or should not assign the statement during correlation--Values="Yes"/"No".
Is Child Of	The statement being described is lower in some arbitrary hierarchy than the statement identified in the «isChildOf» property. The statement identified is a parent of the statement being described (establishes the upward path in the chain of statements in a taxon path.
Is Part Of	The described statement is a physical or logical part of the referenced standards document.
Is Version Of	A related resource of which the described resource is a version, edition, or adaptation.
Language	A language of the statement.
License	A legal document giving official permission to do something with the statement.
List ID	A set of one or more alphanumeric characters and/or symbols denoting the positioning of the statement being described in a sequential listing of statements.
Local Subject	The text string denoting the subject of the document as designated by the promulgating agency. The local subject may be different from the ASN subject assigned to a statement as an organizing mechanism in the ASN.
Major Alignment	Major overlap of relevant concepts between the two competencies.
Minor Alignment	Minor overlap of relevant concepts between the two competencies.
Narrow Alignment	The competency being described covers all of the relevant concepts in the target competency as well as relevant concepts not found in the target competency.
Prerequisite Alignment	The competency being described is a prerequisite to the target competency.
Rights	Information about rights held in and over the statement.
Rights Holder	A person or organization owning or managing rights over the statement.
Skill Embodied	Cognitive, affective, psychomotor or other skill directly or indirectly embodied in the statement.
Spatial	Spatial characteristic of the statement (e.g. geospatial coordinates).
Statement Label	The textual label identifying the class of the statement as designated by the promulgating body—e.g., "Standard," "Benchmark," "Strand," or "Topic."
Statement Notation	An alphanumeric notation or ID code as defined by the promulgating body to identify the statement.
Subject	The learning area/discipline of the statement being described.
Temporal	Temporal characteristic of a statement (e.g., an historic period).

Assesses Competency	The competency that the learning resource being described assesses.
Broad Correlation	The competency covers all of the relevant concepts in the learning resource being described as well as relevant concepts not found in the learning resource.
Exact Correlation	The relevant concepts in the learning resource and the competency statement are coextensive.
Major Correlation	Major overlap of relevant concepts between the learning resource being described and the competency statement.
Minor Correlation	Minor overlap of relevant concepts between the learning resource being described and the competency statement.
Narrow Correlation	The learning resource being described covers all of the relevant concepts in the competency statement as well as relevant concepts not found in the competency.
Prerequisite Competency	A prerequisite competency for the learning resource being described.

Format of entries: The property declarations summarized in the table above are described in detail in the tables below. The format and content of the property descriptions are set out here:

Property URI	A Uniform Resource Identifier used to identify the property.
Label	A human-readable label assigned to the property (May be represented in different languages.)
Defined By	An identifier of a namespace, pointer to a schema, or bibliographic reference for a document within which the property is defined.
Source Definition	The definition of the property in the namespace in which the property was orginated. (May be represented in different languages.)
Source Comments	Comments on the property from the namespace in which the property orginated. (May be represented in different languages.)
ASN Comments	ASN comments on the property including "best practice" information. (May be represented in different languages.)
Type of Term	The grammatical category of the term ("Property", "Class").
Refines	The described property semantically refines the referenced property. A refinement makes the meaning of the element narrower or more specific as defined in the DCMI Abstract Model (http://dublincore.org/documents/abstract-model/). It will share the meaning of the unrefined element but with a more restricted scope.
Property Domain	The domain of the property being defined identifies the class(es) that may be acceptable instances of the subject of RDF statements for the property.
Property Range	The range of the property being defined identifies the class(es) that may be acceptable instances of the object of RDF statements for the property.
Obligation	Indicates whether the element is required to always or sometimes be present. In this application profile the obligation can be: mandatory, mandatory if applicable, strongly recommended , conditional with stated conditions, or optional. Mandatory ensures that some of the elements are always supported and mandatory if applicable means that this element must be supported if the information is available. An element with a mandatory obligation must have a value. The strongly recommended and the optional elements should be filled with a value if the information is appropriate to the given resource but if not, they may be omitted.
Occurrence	Indicates any limit to the repeatability of the element including zero, one to infinity.

Source Comments	Unlike Statement Notation, Alternative Statement Notation need not be an official identifier created by the promulgating agency. It must be an identifier in common use among end-users of the statement. Alternative Statement Notation should be seldom used and only with a clear demonstration of need (i.e., in common use). For example, in the Common Core State Standards (Math) in the U.S., the official Statement Notation of "CCSS.Math.Content.1.NBT.C.4" is abbreviated in common use by end-users to the unofficial Alternative Statement Notation of "1.NBT.4".

[edit] ASN Globally Unique Identifiers

ASN globally unique identifiers (GUIDS) are in the form of Uniform Resource Identifiers (URI). URI for standards documents and standard statements are opaque. "An opaque identifier is simply one without any trace of embedded meaning .... They are ... as rare within our IT infrastructure as is purity elsewhere in human affairs. But they are also as impervious to bit rot and semantic deterioration as any identifier can be, and hence embody neutral virtue." (http://weibel-lines.typepad.com/weibelines/2006/02/identifier_ideo.html) As a result, ASN URI identifying standards documents and standard statements carry no meaning in terms of the content they identify. ASN URI are intended solely to support machine operations and are meaningless to end users. Where an achievement standard contains express identifiers for specific components of the standard, the ASN data model captures those identifiers and makes them available to consuming applications (see statementNotation above).

Implementation Advisory: To support interoperability, applications should identify ASN standards documents and standard statements at the system level using their full ASN URI. Identifiers derived through truncation eliminating the namespace portion of the URI are not guaranteed to be globally unique.
